Truth in Advertising

By Ruben Rivera©

OK, I know that advertisers are known for stretching the truth. But surely we can agree that the above skincare ad goes way beyond that to criminally lying?

I've heard of cremes that promise to "smooth and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles". But are we really expected to believe that woman on the right side of the picture was once the Melting Maniac on the left.

Look at her. She looks like the Wicked Witch of the West AFTER Dorothy threw water on her. Doesn't this kind of transformation require, like, the reorganization of matter at the sub-atomic level?

And give me a break. Are they really claiming that their creme can heal blindness too. Look at the side-by-side picture of her eyes! Wouldn't that require, you know, God?

Hey, I just thought of something. We should rub some of this creme on the creators of this ad. Maybe they'll be cured of blindness too.

Dear Ruben, I do not claim to be a scientist BUT I believe you are on to something!

I watched a movie early this morning around 4:30 when I couldn't go back to sleep, it was called The History Boys on the Sundance Channel. I thought of you and Anita as it was about teachers and their students set in England. I'm thinking of going to see The Debt as it looks so intriguing and I love Helen Mirren.

Love that you are blogging again. Pls say HI to Anita for me!

xoxo, Bonnie

This post reminds me of my mom. We would be watching t.v. back in the early 70's and a commercial would come on and she would say...
Oh damn you, don't insult me and she would turn the channel.

I think the creator of this ad should be tossed in the dryer and hung out to dry. Or perhaps we could put a quarter in his/her ear and watch all the jelly beans in his brain fall out.

However, sometimes the school of stupid makes money in the marketing world. Go figure, they've been insulting us way before 1970. How about the gals in the 50's making mac and cheese in a dress with pointed toed shoes and their hair in a beehive?
I make dinner in a ponytail and sweats and look sexy while I'm at it. Ha!

This was fabulous Ruben!! I'm at the age group now that wishes these face creams boasting miracles would really do what they advertise but alas..... the DO NOT (sniff). It brings a whole new meaning to the expression Super Duper!
Thanks for the great laughter today, oh but wait... that means more laugh lines!! Yikes!

Have a great week! Blessings, Sherry

Ruben, oh my gosh!
"Melting Maniac"...you are hilarious. The poor woman. Must be a hot flash, hee.
Can't stop giggling here. Great post, so true. Is it advertised as Magic cream, or Creme de Divine Intervention?
The airbrushing that is happening these days is frightening, by the way. I am constantly telling Alex "this is not real, this is airbrushed". Oy! ;)

Hugs to you and Anita,

WOW! She's Scary!! What's even scarier is that some people might be fooled by this ad.

Thinking of you!

ruben -- my favorites are the weight loss ads where they clearly have a woman who JUST had a baby and this is her "before" ... et voila, a few months later she looks amazing. ugh.

great post.

Right on, Ruben.
Isn't it funny (and a bit tragic)how there are so many ads/articles on 'looking younger'.
'One' can exercise regularly. Use all manner of creams and potions. Eat the right foods. Not smoke. Drink in moderation....and what do you end up with??...OLD AGE! Baahaahaaa!! If you visit any old folks home and see the wrinkles and thinning white hair...ya gotta know that it didn't just happen for them overnight. They didn't suddenly wake up one morning to find themselves looking that old. It is a slow and natural process to end up looking like that...it has to start sometime. In fact, it is only natural to slowly age. Of course, there is the one exception...and that would be Victoria Beckam. I really don't know how she never seems to age....?????
